some old 93’ footage of SOM at Jefferson High who had won one of those “school performances” by KMEL. I remember this day very clearly…you can see me in the first moment of the video in black. I DJed that show but they had the music set up off stage.

I always loved that show intro over the Beastie Boys “New Style” end beat. We used that on most of the shows during that era particularly the A Tribe called Quest, De LA Soul tour we has just gotten off of.

ALso to clarify the citiesofdope (dope blog btw) comment about Bobbito and us not getting love in the bay until we were on WKCR in NY. He was talking about radio love…it is true, we were not on KMEL before we went on WKCR and Sway and Tech did indeed get their cue from Stretch and Bob on having us on. We certainly had Bay Area underground buzz/love from the circulating demos before all this but KMEL didn’t get down with us until the Souls were signed already.

citiesofdope:

Bobbito Garcia: “If I recall correctly, [Souls] weren’t getting any shine in the Bay until me and Stretch started showing them love on our show.”

I don’t know how you define “shine”… but the crowd shown here at Jefferson in Daly City might as well have been at any High School in the Bay. The Souls’ buzz was huge, long before they appeared on Stretch & Bob’s WKCR show. I’m reporting a larger piece on the era, but you really don’t need to talk to original crew members and scene fixtures to realize that this quote is a particularly NYC-centric type of bullshit. As the homie CM-PX is fond of saying, “there’s a paper trail.”

Maybe Sway and them over at The Wake Up Show were getting their cues from New York this whole time, though.
